BMW Key Types We Replace: Fobs, Transponders, and Smart Keys
BMW has introduced several generations of key technology over the years, and each one requires a different approach. Older BMW models use a basic transponder key — a chipped key that must be cut to the blade profile of your specific lock and programmed to match your car's immobilizer. Mid-generation models introduced the comfort-access key fob, which allows keyless entry and push-button start but must be coded to your vehicle's onboard system. More recent BMWs, including newer X1, X3, and X5 models, use a fully digital smart key or even a BMW Display Key with a built-in touchscreen. Each of these requires on-site programming equipment, not just a key blank.
Our technicians are experienced with the full range of BMW key hardware, including the distinctive BMW rim lock key design found on models with comfort access. If you have a broken key, a key with a worn transponder chip, a dead remote fob, or simply need a working spare, we assess exactly what your vehicle requires and source the correct replacement. We never use generic aftermarket parts where OEM-equivalent hardware is the appropriate choice for your model.
